A wonderful late 17th century map of Palermo,  with a fantastic scene of turbulent seas in the foreground, with many tall ships, boats, and fishing vessels coming into port.  The background depicts the city of Palermo, with meticulously detailed figures of people walking, cathedral, towers, churches and houses with typical Italian architecture and red tile roofs. A gem of an illustration and rather uncommon.

Mallet was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV. This wonderful view of Palermo as seen early in the 18th century is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers."

In excellent antiquarian condition with very attractive full hand color on a c. 6 3/4 " W x 8 " H sheet (image size is c. 4 " W x 5 5/8 " H).
