Newfoundland - 1749

decorative mid-18th century map of the islands in the Gilles Robert de
Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier were descended from the N. Sanson family
and they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material. They were highly
skilled engravers who placed an emphasis upon accurate and precise visual
descriptions over the more commonly encountered tendency towards decoration and
imaginary (unsubstantiated) geography. In VG+ antiquarian
condition with beautiful modern full hand color. Small area of wormholes
have been expertly repaired on the reverse so that they are virtually invisible;
light bit of dampstaining confined mostly to the margin will be of little
consequence once matted and framed. On a c. 7" H x 9 1/4" W sheet
(image size is c. 6 3/4" x 7 7/8"). A scarce 18th century
map of this Canadian region. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
