Ormus - 1748
Note: To view available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. A very appealing mid-18th century map showing the island of Ormus (Hormuz) in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Persia. Once a strategic spot with a large fortress. This view depicts a wonderful level of detail, including a remarkably detailed city plan with hundreds of individual buildings, St. Lucia church, forests, the large fortress and many sailing ships. Certainly one of a mere handful of detailed pre-1800 depictions of the island and one which is a completely different engraving from the Astley voyage image which is similar. Note as well the very decorative framework engraving around this image. Beautifully hand colored. In VG++ to near fine mostly clean condition as seen, original fold lines as issued. Sheet measures c. 10 1/8"W x 9 1/4"H Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
