An oversize and evidently very uncommon late 18th-century English map.

  In VG to VG+ condition overall, a few minor age spots, centerfold split at bottom measuring c. 2" up, but still very attractive and visually pleasing.  With full original hand color, the water area nicely tinted for a more dramatic visual effect, as issued.

Late 18th-century  folio sheet maps issued in London by Bowles and Carver are apparently quite uncommon, even scarce. Their enormous atlas must have been printed in very small numbers and had a very limited distribution.  In searching through almost 20 years of Jolly's map price record and through 25 years of book auction records (ABPC), we can find very few Bowles & Carver maps in general. This information may be useful to a collector or dealer, since research would suggest these maps are only infrequently encountered.

With great visual appeal, a lovely map for framing and display.

Note the large inset titled "A Correct Chart of the Gold Coast", which has various engraved annotations regarding travelers. Large column at right titled "Explanation of the Coast of Africa".
