Note: to view one of 4 available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. "Carte De L'Entree De La Riviere De Sanaga ou Senegal," issued 1746, Paris, by Bellin. A lovely mid-18th century nautical map of the entrance to the Sanaga or Senegal River in what is now Cameroon, Africa. Names each island and indicates the nautical features of the area, including sand bars, the direction of the current, and shallow water. At the mouth of the river, there is an interesting note in French about "La Bare," and how it is not always in the same place. In addition to the Sanaga River, the map also depicts some of the other rivers in the area, several of which stop short, for they were as of yet unexplored. A number of cities and towns are named and indicated with small cathedral symbols. The map features a lovely compass rose with a fleur-de-lys, with rhumb lines raditiating out from it, as well as a lovely decorative cartouche at lower right. Also features beautiful hand color. In VG+ antiquarian condition.
