St. Thomas - 1683

Cartographer: Mallet
Full Title: I. St. Thomas
Published: 1683, Paris

"St. Thomas" issued in 1683, Paris, by Mallet. Mallet was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV. A wonderful 17th century engraved map of the island St. Thomas, which lies in the Gulf of Guinea on the Equator. St. Thomas once belonged to the Portuguese. A mountainous island with fertile valleys, its chief products were maize, dates, sweet potatoes, cotton, sugar, and indigo. This wonderful image shows the island and the coast of Guinea and the African continent. Also shows the islands of Annobon, Prince, and Ferando Poo. Features four charming sailing ships, some with billows of smoke denoting their reliance on wind power for sailing. The equator is depicted as a thin red line running through the island. Major mountains and rivers are depicted.

A lovely, fascinating, and uncommon 17th century map of St. Thomas. With lovely hand color.

 In VG+ antiquarian condition, with some minor light scattered soiling to margins (not detracting). Sheet measures 5 3/8" W x 8 1/4" H. Image measures 4 1/8" W x 6 5/8" H.
