Tobolsk Russia - 1839
"Tobolsk," issued 1839, Barcelona, engraved by Lejeune. A lovely and uncommon 19th century engraved view of Tobolsk, a city in Russia. Tobolsk was once known as the capital city of West Siberia. It lies at the junction of the Irtish and Tobol Rivers, and is situated on the flat top of a hill. It was founded in 1587 and was the seat of the military governor and of the Archbishop of West Siberia. This wonderful 19th century view of the Tobolsk shows the confluence of the two rivers, and a number of the city's buildings. In the foreground are four figures, who are perhaps visitors to the region. Features a very nice level of detail in the engraving, especially evident in the spires and windows of the buildings, as well as in the surrounding vegetation. With lovely hand color. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition. Sheet measures c. 7 7/8" W x 5" H; image area (including text) measures c. 6" W x 5 1/2" H.
