Note: to view one of 3 available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. "Plan du Fort de Mozambique tire de Faria," and Mozambique Bay, issued 1746, Paris, by Didot, engraved by F. Baillieul laine. A wonderful mid 18th century engraved map of the fort, town, and bay of Mozambique in Africa. The map contains two separate maps united by decorative parchment sheet-like borders. The top map contains a plan of the fort and a view of the town, with houses and buildings individually rendered. The various features of the island on which the fort and town are built are also indicated, including rocks, sandbars, and even individual trees perhaps meant to indicate forests). Also of note is the castle that appears to be in the water, with the description "Fort de Santo." This top plan features an anchor, labeled "Ancrage," likely indicating a good place for a ship to drop anchor. The bottom map depicts the entire Mozambique Bay, in which the island and town of Mozambique are found. Interestingly, the houses on the island are depicted on their sides! Also depicted are the islands of St. George and St. Jago. This bottom map features two anchors, rhumb lines, and a fleur-de-lys, thus lending it a wonderful nautical feel. With an unusual, decorative set of borders. With beautiful, full hand color, thus lending it tremendous visual appeal. In VG++ to near excellent antiquarian condition, with some very minor light foxing to left hand margin (not at all detracting). Sheet measures c. 7 1/2 " W x 9 7/8 " H; image measures 6 1/2" W x 7 1/2 " H. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
