"Carte des Isles Qui Sont A L'Embouchure De La Riviere De Canton," issued in La Haye, 1748, by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King". Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages" (engraved by Chedel).

This beautiful 18th century engraved nautical chart depicts the mouth of Canton river in China. Shows a number of islands and island groups off the coast, all of which are named. Gives a number of place names, many of which are now obsolete; also shows mountain ranges and rivers. With sounding depths, rhumb lines, and a gorgeous compass rose, all lending the map its wonderful nautical appeal. Also features a lovely decorative strapwork cartouche.

 Beautifully hand-colored, in lovely clean VG+ to near fine condition. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 13 7/8 " W x 10 " H; image measures 12 1/2 " W x 8 1/8 " H.

A nice example of this pleasing map.
