King of Congo - 1683

Cartographer: Mallet
Full Title: "R. de Congo"
Published: 1683, Paris

"R. De Congo," issued 1683 by Mallet, Paris. A very pleasing 17th-century engraved view of the king of the Congo in Africa. Mallet was a well traveled French military engineer and geographer who worked under King Louis XIV. This view is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers." This wonderful image shows the king in elaborate, traditional dress. He carries a scepter and a spear and is wearing his sword. A small attendant  to the left holds his shield. In the background is a battle scene, with four soldiers on horseback.

European fascination with the Congo first began with the Portuguese, who discovered the  region in the year 1486. Although Europeans maintained control of the area until the 20th century, much of the Congo remained  exotic to Europeans throughout the 19th and even into the 20th century. Features a nice level of detail in the engraving.

In VG+ antiquarian condition. With expert hand coloring. Sheet measures c. 5 3/8 " W x 8 1/4 " H; engraved image (including text) measures c. 4" W x 6 3/8 " H.
