"Carte Des Entrees De La Riviere De Sherbro Ou Serbera ," issued 1747, La Haye, by de Hondt.

A lovely, mid 18th-century, engraved nautical map of the mouth of the Sherboro (also spelled Sherbro) River in Sierra Leone.  Shows the mainland, the island of Sherbro, a number of smaller islands, and the mouth of the river.  The Sherbro River is navigable for large vessels for a length of about 50 miles from its mouth, and was therefore an important point of entry for European explorers into the African continent.  The map also shows the nautical features of the area, including sand banks and prominent rocks.  It gives sounding depths and features a compass rose, fleur-de-lys, and rhumb lines, all of which contribute to its visual appeal.   Also features a large decorative cartouche and gorgeous hand color.

In VG+ antiquarian condition, with some very a few scattered spots (which are faint, mostly in the margins and not detracting). Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 11 1/2" W x 10 5/8" H. Image area (including text) measures c. 9 5/8" W x 7 5/8" H.

An uncommon, Dutch, issue of this map.
