A beautiful, almost primitive, 17th-century, wood-engraved map of Istra, Croatia. Text is in German.
In 16th and 17th century Europe, Sebastien Munster probably had the widest influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe. His monumental work entitled "Cosmographica…", was first issued in 1544. This massive oversize 1000+ page mammoth book contained not only the latest wood engraved views of many well known world cities, but also an almost encyclopedic amount of information about the entire known and unknown world. The book was so popular that it went through almost forty editions in six languages, making it one of the most widely read books of any type in its time. From this now rare and expensive work come many highly prized individual leaves which depict various geographical locations, often with a charming medieval feel and distorted perspectives.
In VG+ antiquarian condition. Overall, quite an acceptable, if not pleasing example. Minimal show-thru, better than is often found on Munster maps of this vintage.
Beautifully hand colored in manner which enhances the visual appeal.
Very uncommon issue of the map on a c. 9" W x 14 1/2" H sheet; image area c. 6 1/8" W x 5 5/8"H.
