Northwest Coast of America and Part of Russia - 1771
Note: to view one of seven available close-ups, click on the area you wish to see. Corners are present and fine- just weighted in the photo. This 18th-century map abounds with the period inaccuracies that make such cartographic documents fascinating. Note the misshapen island of Japan, the true outline of which eluded European cartographers as late as the 19th century. Present-day Alaska is scarcely recognizable. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the prominent fictitious 'River of the West', linking Lake Winnipeg to the Pacific. Dotted lines plot the nautical courses of Captains Tschirikow and Bering. The detailed and thoroughly labeled terrain of Russia stands in marked contrast to the nearly vacant American interior. In good antiquarian condition, having undergone extensive expert restoration to tears and centerfold on the reverse. Map was evidently folded up at one point, here restored to life and made to look quite OK. Expertly lined and painstakingly hand-colored, still with a pleasing overall antiquarian visual appearance and will look nice once framed. On a c. 25" W x 19" H sheet; image area c. 24 1/4" W x 17 1/2" H. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
