England 1790 by Vaugondy
"L' Angleterre Par le S. Robert de Vaugondy Geog ord' du Roi, de S.M. Polon, Duc de Lorr, et de Bar et de la Societe royale de Nanci et censeur Royal. ", issued Paris, 1790. A fine and very decorative 18th century map of England. Wonderful 18th century depictions of the counties, done in a manner and engraving style quite unique to this era of cartographic knowledge and skill. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) and his son Didier were descended from the N. Sanson family and they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material. They were highly skilled engravers who placed an emphasis upon accurate and precise visual descriptions over the more commonly encountered tendency towards decoration and imaginary (unsubstantiated) geography. In VG+ to near excellent antiquarian condition with beautiful full hand color and a large decorative strapwork title cartouche which shows a tall ship, telescope, anchor, etc. on a c.16 1/4" W x 11 3/8" H sheet, image measures 8 5/8" W x 9 3/8" H. From the very rare 1790 edition of this atlas. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
