Cranganor, Malabar Coast, India 1761 by Bellin
"Plan de la Fortresse de Cranganor", issued 1761, Amsterdam by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King". A detailed depiction of Cranganore, a maritime town of Southern India, on the Malabar coast. Formerly possessed by the Portuguese and after a struggle by the Dutch. Indeed, the plan shows the new fortress after it was rebuilt in 1709. The map has a nice period feel due to the compass rose and the sailing ships along the coastline. Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages". A fine mid-18th century India related map in VG+ to near fine, clean antiquarian condition, nicely hand colored, on a 13 1/4" W x 9 3/4" H sheet, image measures 10 1/4" W x 6 3/4" H (original fold lines as issued).
