"Carte Des Pays Habites par les Samojedes et Ostiacs", issued 1779, Amsterdam after Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King". Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages". A very detailed and desirable mid-18th century map of this Arctic region which includes the remote island of Nova Zembla and the Russian region below it. With beautiful full hand color. From a scarce supplemental volume to the massive Dutch edition of Prevost's "Voyages and Travels". A fine mid-18th century map in near fine, clean antiquarian condition on a c. 11 3/8" W x 10 3/8" H sheet, image measures 9 1/2" W x 6 1/4" H.
