Africa 1719 Mallet
Note: to see three available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. A charming early 18th century map of the southern portion of Africa. With a large title cartouche which displays Lions and a winged dragon creature of some sort. Interior lakes are wildly misplaced, yet correctly linked to the Nile river. Issued Paris, 1719 by A.M.Mallet. Mallet was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked in 17th century France under King Louis XIV. This charming map is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers". Surely not common and very desirable thus. The actual engraving is sharper than our photo reveals. Will look wonderful once framed. In near fine antiquarian condition with beautiful full hand color on a c. 8 " H x 6 3/4 " W sheet, engraved area c. 5 1/2 " H x 4 " W.
