Note: to see three close-ups of this picture click on the area you wish to view. "Isles de la Reine Charlotte", issued c. 1774, Paris for a very early edit. of J. Hawkesworth's atlas to accompany Cook's Voyages in the Southern Hemisphere. (at bottom right is "Benard Dir."- for the French engraver Robert Benard whose work appeared in French edit's of "Cook's Voyages"). A very detailed depiction of these South Pacific islands, the Isle du Lord Egmont and Isle du Lord Howe not yet fully mapped, their southern coastlines tentatively depicted in dotted lines. Wonderfully detailed in an accurate manner at a very early date in their cartographic representation- indeed, these may well be the first maps to appear in Europe which focus on this island group in the South Pacific. Beautifully hand colored, in VG+ antiquarian condition, original fold lines as issued, on a c. 11 " H x 16 3/8 " W sheet, image area c.9 1/4 " H x 15 1/8 " W.
