World in Spheres with California as an Island 1748 by Buffier
Note: to see 2 available close-ups of this picture, click on the area you wish to see. A charming little primitive map of the world which depicts California as an island. Also, above North America appears to be a clearly delineated North West passage from the Atlantic across to the Pacific. This misconception helps to create a large western land mass protrusion where Alaska should be. An enormous continent at the bottom of the Eastern Hemisphere and an enormous, undefined Australia all point to a much earlier date than the map possesses. Issued Paris, 1758 for Buffier's "Geographie Universelle...", printed by Pierre- Francois Giffart. In VG+ condition, original fold lines as issued, a couple of very short, minor seam splits along the bottom fold lines. Original hand color? On a sheet 7 7/8" W by 6 1/2" H with the image measuring 7" W by 5 3/8" H. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
