"Diverses Especes de Singes de L'Ile de Ceylan", Published in Paris, 1750 by Chedel (sc.) and Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King". Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages", from which this view derives. A very detailed, scarce, and desirable mid-18th century view of this island, including what appear to be some fanciful cross between monkeys and humans.

In near excellent, clean antiquarian condition with attractive full hand color. On a c. 7 1/2 " W x 9 7/8 " H sheet (engraved image size is 5 1/2 " W x 7 3/8 ").
