"Carte du District de Tranquebar", issued Paris, 1761 by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King".

A very detailed mid-18th century depiction of this region of Coromandel coastal India, then of some importance to the French. Nicely detailed, with many churches and temples located, as well as "maisons de Repos", palm and coconut trees, and locating Tranquebar fort, etc. It appears to be a newly updated chart based upon the latest geographical information, quite scarce as it appeared in a supplemental volume to the Prevost set and is thus much less frequently encountered than the maps from the main set.

Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages".

A scarce map with expert and most attractive full hand color. In near fine, clean antiquarian condition on a c. 14 3/8 " H x 14 " W sheet, image area c. 11 1/2 " H x 12 " W, original folds as issued (in no way detracting).
