An Aegean Sea Turkish island depicted towards the end of the 16th Century. Here shown with a beautiful title cartouche, SIX sea monsters off the coasts, a compass rose, very decorative miniature cities and expert hand-coloring combine to make this a jewel of a map which will look wonderful framed. By Girolamo Porro (Venetian, flourished 1567-96). Published in Venice, c. 1572-90 by Simon Galignani for "L'Isole piu famose del mondo" written by Tommaso Porcacchi. ("Most famous Islands of the World"--in fact a world atlas). Set within a wood-block-decorated page of text relating to the map. Expertly hand-colored. Near fine antiquarian condition with a few tiny worm holes scattered across the sheet, all well outside the engraved map area. On a c. 8” W x 11” H sheet. Ordering:
