A gorgeous, well preserved late 19th century red full leather prize binding. Ornately gilt spine in six gilt-ruled compartments w/ central gilt devices, gilt title on contrasting black leather label. Boards are ruled in patterned gilt and blind-tooled designs; top board w/ central gilt logo featuring a deer and a dog (?) - "The Henry Smith School Hartlepool". Leather, overall, smooth and supple; gilt is bright; binding is clean, tight and sound. Marbled endpapers. 

Mostly very clean internally w/ scattered portraits. Frontis depicts Lord Shaftesbury. Bookplate "The Henry Smith School, Hartlepool / 1892 / Procter / English Prize ? Form I / J. R. Alderson Headmaster". 

In near fine clean condition. A superior example of a 19th century full leather prize binding. Book measures c. 5 1/4" x 7". 288 pp.
