Attractively bound in period black half leather. Spine in six compartments w/ gilt title and date, raised bands. Half leather and marbled paper covered boards are mostly clean w/ minimal wear. Binding sound w/ first signature somewhat loosened. Paper easily chipped at fore-edges but only minor. Text, of course, in German. An article of note on San Francisco w/ an engraving of several buildings. According to Wikipedia:

" The Arbour Illustrated family sheet was a forerunner of modern pictorials and the first large, successful German mass sheet. A number of copies of 382.000 copies appeared from 1853 to 1944 and reached 1876 under its publisher Ernst Keil. Since the arbour was consumed both in the common family reading, and in numerous leihbibliotheken and Cafés as display for the order, the estimation of the actual readership extends to two to five million to its weddings.

"Originally quite politically by the radical liberal position of the publisher Ernst Keil coined/shaped, developed itself the arbour after its death 1878 increasingly to a conservative maintenance sheet . Political or religious topics were after this new positioning taboo, likewise divorce or suicide. The arbour published continuation novels .

"The arbour represents just as comprehensive as source indispensable for many historical investigation fields to German culture history."

Book measures c. 9 1/2" x 12 1/2".
