A handsome mid-19th century half leather binding. Spine in six compartments w/ gilt title on contrasting black and red leather labels, raised bands w/ gilt.  Half leather and marbled paper covered boards.  Binding, overall, somewhat scuffed; a tight, sound example.

Mostly clean internally w/ light scattered soiling; foxing confined to the first and last few pages. Articles of note include "Uncle Tom at Home" - a cultural study of the politics of Africa, the 18th century ship Portland, Napoleon Bonaparte as a family man, New York, John Randolph, story "Islands of the Pacific" by Herman Melville, Mohawk Indians, "Lighthouse Construction and Illumination", Chile, "Hasheesh Eater" & "Apocalypse of Hasheesh", "Weimar in 1825", Jesuits, Tae Ping Wang, Ralph Waldo Emerson in England, Leon Foucault, "De Tocqueville on the Causes of the French Revolution", Ninevah, Heinrich Heine, Florida Keys and poetry. Most of the articles and stories are unattributed to any author.  Marbled endpapers.

In VG+ condition.  General interest of worldly events for the well read. A great volume packed w/ very interesting material.  Book measures c. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2". 668 pp
