An ornately gilt mid-19th century period black full leather binding. Spine in five compartments w/ gilt title, patterned gilt slightly raised bands, leather gently rubbed w/ slight scuffing, gilt remains bright. Ornately gilt boards w/ intricate floral devices, boards exhibit light edgewear, boards slightly bowed. Joint leather gently rubbed. Binding tight and sound. a.e.g. Mostly clean internally w/ uniform light age-toning. Eight steel engraved plates w/ tissue guards throughout including frontis and title page. Frontis depicts "And ne'er did Grecian chisel trace / A nymph, a Naid, or a Grace / Of finer form or lovelier face". Endpapers toned (as shown in the image, due, perhaps, to the ink originally used on this 19th century leather); inscription on f.f.e. Hinges cracked after endpapers.In VG+ condition, slight shelf wear, text block and plates mostly clean. Overall, a charming 19th century period leather binding w/ engravings.
