History & Antiquities of Boston - 1856
A handsome mid-19th century period half leather binding. Spine in six, blind-tooled compartments w/ decorative blindstamped devices, gilt title, raised bands - quite a nice shelf appearance w/ minimal rubbing at spine extremities. Half leather and black cloth boards are gently rubbed, slightly worn at board corners and edges (tiny split along front board). Binding tight and sound. Marbled edges. Text block is mostly clean w/ two folding maps, folding charts and many illustrations including steel-engraved portraits. Large folding map at frontis depicts a panoramic view of the city w/ extensive key at bottom labeling 101 buildings; lightly soiled w/ extraneous folds and a split at one fold line but, overall, quite an appealing map. Other folding map depicts "Vicinity of Boston, from Bunker Hill Monument, 1853" showing fifty-eight buildings labeled in the key along the bottom. Also includes a lovely folding engraving depicting "A View of the City of Boston the Capital of New England, in North America. Drawn on the Spot by His Excellency Governor Pownal". Folding charts at rear illustrated genealogy of some important Boston families: Governor Sumner, Dudley, Chauncy, Leberett and Lawrence. Inscription on second free endpaper, "Lizzie P. Hilliard. From her Father's Library - August, 1885."; charming bookplate, "Elizabeth Parker Hilliard". Marbled endpapers. In all, a very nice example of this well illustrated mid-19th century comprehensive history of Boston. Uncommon to find in this condition w/ original period binding. Book measures c. 7 3/8" x 10 3/8." 839 pp. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
