Volume 1, 329 pp. Volume 2, 370 pp. A first edition. A two volume matching set of gilt and blindstamped mid-19th century publisher's period brown cloth bindings. Gilt title, author and volume number near spine heads, "Boston" near spine tails; smooth gilt-ruled spines exhibit frayed cloth at the ends with the cloth on volume two missing to headband. Boards display intricate floral blindstamped designs, cloth is rubbed with corner wear. Bindings slightly cocked, otherwise tight and sound. Scattered foxing throughout the text blocks. Numerous advertisements in this first edition Stowe. Previous owner's inscriptions on second free endpapers. Hinges cracked. In VG to VG+ condition. Books measure c. 8" H x 5 1/4".
