Literary Remains of Emanuel Deutsch - 1874
Here we have a handsome, ornately gilt late 19th century period brown half leather binding. Spine in six heavily gilt compartments, gilt title; spine perhaps very slightly rubbed but this does not detract from the beautiful shelf appearance and patina. Half leather, maroon and blue marbled paper covered boards are mostly clean with minimal wear, leather rubbed at board corners. Binding tight and sound. Marbled edges. Mostly very clean internally, light scattered foxing on endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate, "William B. Rice. - Qui legit, regit." and binder's tag "Bought of Henry Sotheran & Co - Booksellers and Binders - 36 Picadilly - London." on inside front board. Contents include "The Talmud", "Islam", "Notes on a Lecture of Semitic Paleography", "Egypt, Ancient and Modern", the alchemist "Hermes Trismegistus", "On the Targums", "On the Samaritan Pentateuch", "Book of Jasher" and "Arabic Poetry in Spain and Sicily". In all, a handsome, ornate late 19th century binding of Emanuel Oscar Menahem Deutsch's works. Deutsch is one of the foremost Jewish scholars on the Middle East; he worked at the British Museum. Scarce in such an attractive period leather binding. Book measures c. 8 3/4" H x 5 3/4. 465 pp. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
