'Twixt Sirdar & Menelik - 1901

Author: Captain M.S. Wellby
Full Title:  'Twixt Sirdar & Menelik. An Account of a Year's Expedition from Zeila to Cairo through Unknown Abyssinia. Illustrated
Published:

New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1901

409 pp plus 3 pp of Harper & Brothers' Publications on early 20th century world exploration and culture.

An appealing gilt and embossed turn-of-the-century publisher's pictorial brown cloth binding. Gilt title, author and publisher on smooth spine; faded white ex-library call numbers. Top board displays an African warrior embossed in black and white, gilt title and author; boards are mostly very clean, virtually flawless with bright gilt.

Text block mostly clean, numerous full and half page photographs - 65 illustrations in all. Photographs depict the tribes and homestead of native Africans as well as elephant hunting. Tissue guarded frontis depicts "The Emperor Menelik II". "Manchester City Library - 1854" stamped in blind on title page. Library pocket pasted to rear free endpaper.

In all, a fantastic, near fine (albeit, ex-libris) early 20th century first edition of Wellby's year-long expedition that culminated in his death in South Africa. It's a well-illustrated account of Wellby's expedition in modern-day Ethiopia including Harrar, Addis Ababa, from Zaquala to Lake Lamina, Walamo, Tencha, Lake Rudolf, from the Boma to the Shilluk country. Menelik was emperor of Abyssinia.

Book measures c. 8 3/4" H x 6 1/2".
