Works of Longfellow - 1898
An appealing, heavily gilt late 19th century half leather binding. Six elaborately gilt compartments, gilt raised bands, title and "illustrated" on two separate contrasting leather labels; leather and gilt on spine very gently rubbed but this does not detract at all from this beautiful shelf appearance. Half leather boards and marble paper-covered boards exhibit some minimal light edgewear and leather frayed a tiny bit at bottom corners. Joint leather gently rubbed. Binding overall is tight and sound. Marbled edges. Mostly very clean internally with sixteen lovely line illustrations depicting various Longfellow verses. Steel engraved frontis depicts "Henry W Longfellow - 1879" with tissue guard. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner inscription in black ink on second free endpaper, "J. C. D. Coster - Dec. 1899 - From C. J. Johnson." Charming stylized bookplate inside front board, "J. Carroll de Coster". In all, an extremely appealing, ornately gilt late 19th century half leather binding of Longfellow with a wonderful shelf appearance. Quite uncommon in a fine binding like this. Book measures c. 8" H x 5 1/2". 677 pp. Ordering: Please use the Buy Me button below, or phone the shop to order this map.
