The Geographical Journal - 1931
An attractive early/ mid-20th century period half red leather binding. Red leather spine in five compartments with gilt raised bands, bright gilt title and volume; leather rubbed along spine extremities, small leather chips at spine ends but all around, quite an appealing shelf appearance. Half leather, marbled paper covered boards clean with some edge wear. Leather rubbed along joints. Binding tight and sound. Edges speckled red. Text block mostly very clean with five large folding lithographed maps and many b&w photographs. Maps included are "Arabia - Sketch Map to illustrate Drainage and distribution of Sands and Tribes in the Eastern part of Rub'al Khali.", Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and Uganda Borderland - The Langia - Acholi Mountain Region.", "Arabia - Sketch map of Hadhramaut.", "Lopo Homen's Map of 1519" and "Map to illustrate the paper on Gravity Anomalies in the Eastern Archipelago.". Two of these maps have torn along the fold line. Other articles of notable significance are "Antarctic Meteorology", "The Mechanism of Earth Movements" and "The Great Barrier Reefs". Maps are largely clean, although one of the maps is cleanly split in 2 ("Map to illustrate the paper on Gravity Anomalies in the Eastern Archipelago."). What a great early 20th century Royal Geographical Society compilation. These early 1930's issues are not only fascinating to read, but they are attractively bound, too.
