Lithograph Handkerchief Box - c.1870

Full Title: Superior Quality; Linen Cambric; Handkerchiefs; Ready for Use
Published:

made by Henry Matier & Co., Belfast. Based on the printing method, c. 1868 or so?

Somewhat outside our area of knowledge, but certainly a wonderful and very scarce survival- an original mid -19th century handkerchief box covered in the original lithographed decorative paper. Box originally held one dozen "Gentlemen's Linen Cambric HKFs". The front of the box is a woman surrounded by various medals the firm had won in Paris 1867 and London 1862. When you open the box, there are 2 compartments, a lithographed woman on each side. These interior doors open into the boxes where the handkerchiefs were stored. The original purple silk ribbons used to pull open the doors are still present!

The box does display some obvious age wear, light soiling and relatively minor staining as seen, but in our opinion it is very well preserved (how many people today save handkerchief boxes, no matter how attractive!?) Surely, this box is a very rare survival and a wonderful item. It's difficult to assign a value for it, but in almost 20 years of selling antiquarian paper items we have never had another like it and it will probably be many years before we see another. Box measures 3 3/4" W x 7 3/4" H x 2 1/2" deep.
